How fast does uterine prolapse progress?

There is no way to predict how quickly any individual’s prolapse will progress. In most instances, it takes many years to notice a gradual worsening of pelvic organ prolapse.

How does uterine prolapse feel?

Uterine prolapse can cause a wide variety of symptoms in different patients depending on the degree and severity of the prolapse.

Can uterine prolapse cause bleeding?

It is uncommon for prolapse to cause vaginal bleeding.

Do not assume that vaginal bleeding after menopause is due to prolapse. It is not normal and should be evaluated. 

How to avoid uterine prolapse?

It may not be entirely possible to avoid a uterine prolapse. But, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk.

Can uterine prolapse cause incontinence?

The same things that cause weakening of the tissues that support the uterus and upper vagina also cause loss of support to the urethra. This can result in leakage of urine with laugh, cough, and/or sneeze – called stress incontinence.

When uterine prolpase is significant the bladder and the nerves supplying it can be affected leading to urinary urgency, frequency, urge associated incontinence and incomplete bladder emptying.

Can uterine prolapse cause heavy periods?

In general, a uterine prolapse is not associated with heavy periods. There are many gynecologic conditions which can be associated with heavy periods, so a visit to the gynecologist is warranted.
